Europe (EU & EEA)

Welcome to the European Union and European Economic Area (EU /EEA) section of the FIA Guide for the disabled traveller. Read this page, and then click on the country you intend to visit.

The EU and EEA have adopted a standardised model Parking Permit, called a Parking Card, and most member states now issue it.

Your right to the parking concessions in the EU / EEA country you intend to visit depends on the Parking Card / Permit you have, and where you are from:

Do you have the standardised European model Parking Card issued by an EU/EEA member state? If so, most member states will recognise it, but several may not

Are you from an EU / EEA member state, but do not have the European model Parking Card? If so, many member states will recognise it provided it shows the international wheelchair symbol, but some may not

Are you are a visitor to the EU / EEA from another country with your own Parking Permit? If so, many member states will recognise your Parking Permit if it shows the international wheelchair symbol, but some may not

This is explained under the heading "Where you may use your Parking Card"

"You may use your Parking Card in _ _" means that reciprocity has been confirmed by an FIA motoring club or by a government expert, or both

"We currently have no information whether or not you may use your Parking Card in _ _" means we have been unable to find information on reciprocity - you should ask locally as you may be eligible to the parking concessions shown in the Guide

"You may not use your Parking Card in _ _ _ " means we have been informed that it will not be recognised and you are not eligible to the parking concessions shown in the Guide

What you should always do:

  • Check the entry in the Guide.
  • Ask locally if your Parking Permit / Card will be recognised - local people, police and parking officials will want to help you so do not be afraid to ask

  • If you are satisfied your Parking Permit / Card will be recognised, display next to it the print-out notice to explain to police and parking officials your right to park, and why

Always - ask locally, park sensibly and safely, obey the rules, enjoy your visit!
